The pheromone molecule pregnenolone (commonly called neno) was the first pheromone to ever be prepared in DIY fashion from dietary supplements.

Pregnenolone is an endogenous steroid prohormone which is a precursor of both androgenic and estrogenic sex hormones, as well as glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids. It is an active neurosteroid currently under investigation for its effects on learning and memory. It is commonly used as a dietary supplement for cognitive enhancement, mood enhancement, stress relief, arthritis relief, and lowering cholesterol. However, there is also some concern about the use of pregnenolone as a supplement because it is readily converted into sex hormones and so may present sexual side effects.

Pregnenolone is active as a pheromone at doses as low as 1mcg, and generally invokes positive responses even in high doses. It has been fairly well tested as a single molecule and in DIY pheromone mixes but is not known to be included in any commercial pheromone product at this time. It is, however, likely included in some products formerly sold by Paradise 7.

The primary pheromone effect of pregnenolone is mood enhancement. It has been described as remarkably consistent in its ability to elevate the mood of both the wearer and those exposed, and to cause people to interpret events more positively. Additionally, it seems to enhance sex drive and increase flirtatious behavior in both men and women. In doses greater than 25mcg, some confusion effects have been noted, with those exposed remaining happy or even giggly, but at the same time appearing somewhat forgetful or flustered. A small number of testers have reported positive results at doses >100mcg. Some other pheromone effects which have been noted by testers:

Notes on Dosage

Reported dosages for DIY neno generally run about 1/5th of those for lab-grade pregnenolone. Little can be ascertained about optimal dosage from the dosages reported by DIY users. Some of the variance in dosage may be accounted for by imprecise dosages in the supplements being used, or by incomplete solubility in the carrier medium.
